Baloyi on Chiefs’ co-coaching: Who’s head coach, who’s assistant?

Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has criticised Amakhosi’s co-coaching arrangement of Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, saying it causes confusion and mixed messages for players. The latest result, a 0-0 draw against Chippa United, extended Chiefs’ winless streak to three matches and raised further questions for co-coaches Youssef and Kaze.

Baloyi believes the constant shift in who takes charge during matches reveals a lack of clear leadership. Baloyi insists Chiefs must appoint one definitive head coach to avoid the problems that come with two equal leaders.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys find themselves slipping down the table after a tough run both at home and in Africa. Their CAF Confederation Cup run has started with a 2–1 defeat to Al Masry in Egypt, and a fortunate draw against Zamalek has left them just a point above Zesco United in bottom place.

Back in the Betway Premiership, the draw against Chippa, a side with only one win in 14 matches, has pushed Chiefs to fifth place.

HARD QUESTIONS OVER KAIZER CHIEFS CO-COACHES

“For me, it is evident, [lack of leadership] you can see early in the game one coach is in charge, and then later on another one takes over,” Baloyi said on the Soccer Beat podcast.

“This affects the players. For me, the club needs to make a decision on who is in charge. Even between the two of them, decide who is the head and who is the assistant. As long as you have this co-coaching thing, there are different messages going to the players.

“When you understand leadership, you will understand that players, and people in general, no matter the environment, we respond differently to a leader, now when you have two leaders in an organisation with the same power, you are bound to have problems.

“The youngsters will learn the hard way…” Baloyi concluded. Coming up next for Amakhosi is a trip to the Mbombela Stadium to face TS Galaxy on Sunday at 15:30.
