Carnell names MLS star Mbokazi must emulate to succeed at Chicago Fire

Mbekezeli Mbokazi in action for Orlando Pirates

USA‑based SA coach Bradley Carnell has told Chicago Fire FC‑bound Mbekezeli Mbokazi which player’s path he should follow to thrive in Major League Soccer [MLS].

Carnell predicted that Mbokazi will use the MLS as a launchpad for an eventual European move, judging by his work ethic and work rate.

Mbokazi has been the backbone of Orlando Pirates‘ defence in the 2025/26 campaign, and his standout performances triggered massive interest in his services.

His style was enough to charm Hugo Broos, who in turn rewarded him with a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 AFCON. A week ago, the 20-year-old was unveiled by Chicago Fire FC after signing a long‑term contract that will keep him at the club until 2029, with an option to extend for another year.

The gangly centre‑back joins the MLS, a league that already houses SA stars such as Bongokuhle Hlongwane [Minnesota United] and Olwethu Makhanya [Philadelphia Union].

As he braces for the new challenge away from home, Carnell—who won the 2025 Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year accolade for steering Philadelphia Union, said Mbokazi should follow in Makhanya’s footsteps.

Makhanya has established himself as a defensive mainstay under Carnell at Philadelphia Union, featuring in 32 of 34 matches in the MLS Eastern Conference. The 21-year-old scored one goal in the just ended season.

Makhanya joined Philadelphia Union from Stellenbosch FC in July 2023 before rising through the ranks to be a key player at the club. For his commitment and contribution, he recently earned a contract extension.

“I think he [Mbokazi] has the quality. Now he just needs to show the work ethic, the work rate, and the quality he’s already been displaying,” Carnell told FARPost. “He shouldn’t think he’s already made it because of a big transfer, he has to stay humble and win the confidence of his teammates.

“I’m sure that’s what the coach [Gregg Berhalter] is telling him; I know the coach very well. We played Chicago in the playoffs, and they’re a good team with some talented individuals and a very attacking style that should suit Mbokazi’s qualities.”

Carnell added: “He’ll have to show the character to keep working away from home away, from South Africa, that’s always the big challenge.

“It’s something Olwethu Makhanya did very well, to accept that challenge and stay humble, and I’d say Mbokazi should do exactly the same. He has to follow in Makhanya’s footsteps.”
