Botswana’s Black Lions closing in on ex-Mamelodi Sundowns player

A former Mamelodi Sundowns star looks set to cross the border and join the ranks of Botswana’s Black Lions FC, who are home to on-loan Kaizer Chiefs defender Xolani Cossa.

The Gaborone-based side is reportedly in advanced talks with former Sundowns right-back Nicholus Lukhubeni, who is seeking to revive his career following his recent departure from Kruger United.

Lukhubeni’s potential arrival comes as the Black Lions undergo a transition period, having recently parted ways with coach Owen Da Gama and appointed Srdjan Zivojinov of Serbia as his replacement.

The move could offer Lukhubeni a fresh start after a challenging spell in South African football.

The 29-year-old right-back came through the Brazilians’ development ranks in 2019 under then-head coach Pitso Mosimane. However, he struggled to break into the star-studded starting line-up at his boyhood club.

His time at Sundowns saw him loaned out repeatedly to several clubs, including Sekhukhune United, Maritzburg United, Moroka Swallows, and Cape Town Spurs.

Despite having made 85 appearances in the top-flight across all competitions, Lukhubeni was unable to establish himself as a regular starter at Kruger United. He made only five league appearances during his six-month stint, which began in November 2024 on a short-term deal as a free agent. Following the expiration of his contract, the wingback was released by the club, putting him back on the market.

The Black Lions have been in talks with Lukhubeni, and all signs point to him joining the club in January.

The transfer window aligns with the league’s break, as Botswana’s national team, the Zebras, are participating in the AFCON tournament. Black Lions currently sit 10th in the league table after 14 games, having recorded three wins, four draws, and seven losses.
