‘This one hurts’: Marshall Munetsi laments missing AFCON

Marshall Munetsi has expressed disappointment with ZIFA for resorting to speculation rather than contacting Wolverhampton Wanderers about his fitness.

The Wolves utility player suffered a muscle injury that kept him out of recent Premier League matches. And on Monday, Wolves coach Rob Edwards said the ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder could be out for at least six weeks. Ultimately, that rules him out of action until February 2026.

However, following Zimbabwe’s unveiling of the final 2025 AFCON squad, an announcement that omitted him, Munetsi responded with surprising comments, suggesting he’s in fine fettle.

WHAT MARSHALL MUNETSI SAID AFTER ZIMBABWE AFCON SQUAD OMISSION

In an emotional Facebook post, the 29‑year‑old wrote: “This one hurts, as representing the Warriors has always been a dream, and wearing our colours is the greatest honour of my career.

“AFCON would have been even more significant. I had an injury recently, but my club, Wolves, communicated with the association that I was recovering well and even offered medical support to ensure that I could participate in the AFCON.

“Unfortunately, I received no follow‑up communication, and decisions were made without clarity—speculation, which wasn’t the case.

“While I’m hurt, my unwavering support for the national team remains strong. I respect the coach’s decisions and stand behind the boys wholeheartedly. I will always be ready to defend the nation I love.”

Munetsi is not the only key player missing in The Warriors’ 2025 AFCON squad. Former PSL star Walter Musona was deemed unfit by coach Mario Marinica, while Khama Billiat excused himself from the national team.

Former Orlando Pirates attacker Terrence Dzvukamanja is absent, as is AmaZulu FC striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya due to fitness concerns. On the other hand, TS Galaxy forward Junior Zindoga and a former JDR Stars player, Ishmael Wadi, made the final cut.

Zimbabwe are placed in Group B alongside Angola, Bafana Bafana and Egypt. Their campaign begins on 22 December against Egypt, with a second match against Angola four days later. They will finish the group stage on 29 December, facing Bafana Bafana in their final fixture.
