Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi has been handed a crucial role as the Warriors of Zimbabwe step up preparations for the 2025 AFCON.
Just a week before the continental showpiece begins, and, like all the participating nations, Zimbabwe has had its time to prepare.
Placed in Group B alongside Bafana Bafana, Angola, and Egypt, the Warriors will kick off their 2025 AFCON campaign with a match against Egypt on 22 December in Agadir. Four days later, they will face Angola. Additionally, they will conclude the group stage against Bafana Bafana in their final fixture on 29 December.
WASHINGTON ARUBI NAMED ZIM VICE-CAPTAIN FOR 2025 AFCON

The veteran goalie has been given a key role as Zimbabwe seeks to go beyond the group phase. Arubi was appointed vice‑captain in the absence of Wolves FC utility player Marshall Munetsi, who will miss the tournament due to injury.
Godknows Murwira of Scottland FC is the second vice‑captain. Simply put, Arubi—who played every game in Zimbabwe’s 2025 AFCON qualification journey—has been a cornerstone of leadership for the team.
Furthermore, he is expected to help captain Marvellous Nakamba stabilise the squad ahead of what looks like a daunting task in Morocco. At the age of 40, the former SuperSport United [now Siwelele FC] goalkeeper remains Zimbabwe’s number‑one goalkeeper, deputised by Magesi FC’s Elvis Chipezeze and Martin Mapisa of MWOS FC.
ZIFA GIVES CLARITY ON MARSHALL MUNETSI’S NON-SELECTION
Additionally, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has issued a statement detailing why Marshall Munetsi was not selected for the tournament. On Thursday, Munetsi expressed his disappointment on social media about not making the 2025 AFCON squad.
“ZIFA places on record its deep appreciation for Mr Marshall Munetsi, whose professionalism, leadership and exemplary service to the Warriors over many years are held in the highest regard,” reads ZIFA’s statement.
“He has consistently represented Zimbabwe with distinction and pride and remains a valued member of the national football family. The Association looks forward to his continued contribution once he is fully fit and medically cleared.
“ZIFA reiterates unequivocally that Mr Marshall Munetsi’s non‑selection was purely medical, procedural and regulatory, guided by player‑welfare imperatives, CAF competition rules and the FIFA Club Protection Programme, without malice, bias or administrative impropriety.”
