Washington Arubi gets key role ahead of 2025 AFCON

New Zimbabwe vice-captain Washington Arubi

Marumoโ€ฏGallants goalkeeper Washingtonโ€ฏArubi has been handed a crucial role as the Warriors of Zimbabwe step up preparations for the 2025โ€ฏAFCON.

Just a week before the continental showpiece begins, and, like all the participating nations, Zimbabwe has had its time to prepare.

Placed in Group B alongside Bafanaโ€ฏBafana, Angola, and Egypt, the Warriors will kick off their 2025โ€ฏAFCON campaign with a match against Egypt on 22โ€ฏDecember in Agadir. Four days later, they will face Angola. Additionally, they will conclude the group stage against Bafana Bafana in their final fixture on 29โ€ฏDecember.

The veteran goalie has been given a key role as Zimbabwe seeks to go beyond the group phase. Arubi was appointed viceโ€‘captain in the absence of Wolves FC utility player Marshallโ€ฏMunetsi, who will miss the tournament due to injury.

Godknowsโ€ฏMurwira of Scottlandโ€ฏFC is the second viceโ€‘captain. Simply put, Arubiโ€”who played every game in Zimbabweโ€™s 2025โ€ฏAFCON qualification journeyโ€”has been a cornerstone of leadership for the team.

Furthermore, he is expected to help captain Marvellousโ€ฏNakamba stabilise the squad ahead of what looks like a daunting task in Morocco. At the age of 40, the former SuperSport United [now Siwelele FC] goalkeeper remains Zimbabweโ€™s numberโ€‘one goalkeeper, deputised by Magesiโ€ฏFCโ€™s Elvisโ€ฏChipezeze and Martinโ€ฏMapisa of MWOS FC.

ZIFA GIVES CLARITY ON MARSHALL MUNETSI’S NON-SELECTION

Additionally, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has issued a statement detailing why Marshallโ€ฏMunetsi was not selected for the tournament. On Thursday, Munetsi expressed his disappointment on social media about not making the 2025ย AFCON squad.

โ€œZIFA places on record its deep appreciation for Mrโ€ฏMarshallโ€ฏMunetsi, whose professionalism, leadership and exemplary service to the Warriors over many years are held in the highest regard,” reads ZIFA’s statement.

“He has consistently represented Zimbabwe with distinction and pride and remains a valued member of the national football family. The Association looks forward to his continued contribution once he is fully fit and medically cleared.

“ZIFA reiterates unequivocally that Mrโ€ฏMarshallโ€ฏMunetsiโ€™s nonโ€‘selection was purely medical, procedural and regulatory, guided by playerโ€‘welfare imperatives, CAF competition rules and the FIFA Club Protection Programme, without malice, bias or administrative impropriety.โ€
