Broos reflects on unbeaten record after AFCON opener victory

Hugo Broos addressing the media ahead of the match against Angola

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained why it is vital for his squad to ignore the noise surrounding their historic unbeaten streak and instead treat every AFCON fixture as a standalone final.

South Africa secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Angola in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON tournament at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Monday evening.

Broos’ troops have now played 27 matches without a single loss – Bafana’s longest unbeaten run in history. This is outside of the three points that were deducted in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and awarded to Lesotho over the Teboho Mokoena yellow card saga.

Following the win on Monday, Bafana are now top of Group B alongside Egypt, who also registered a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe in their opening match on the same night.

However, Broos doesn’t want to get carried away by the impressive run but instead he wants to remain more focused on winning every game at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

“This is a nice record. But it’s not less or not more, so I don’t look at that,” he told journalists.

“The more matches we remain unbeaten, the shortest we will be to a defeat. This is normal. So it’s not for that, that we are doing it to be more and more unbeaten.

“We just want to win every game and that’s our philosophy that we also try to show on the pitch like you saw in the second half against Angola. So again, it’s very nice and we are very happy with it,” he added.

WHY BAFANA BAFANA COACH WOULD CHOSE WINNING AFCON OVER CURRENT RECORD

“But if you ask me what you want, more games unbeaten or winning AFCON, I think you already know what I will answer you. So again it’s nice to see that but for me it’s not more on numbers.”

Meanwhile, South Africa will play their next AFCON Group B match against Egypt on Friday.
