Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder Mpho Makola has shed light on his latest venture: the acquisition of an ABC Motsepe League status by his team, Via Sports.

Makola has been coaching Via Sports in the past few years, a team he founded alongside his business partner Tshepo Mabona. The club has been making waves in the SAFA regional League, which is the fourth division of South African football.

In the previous season, Via Sports came close to gaining promotion to the ABC Motsepe League; however, they fell short in the national playoffs. Following their impressive performances last season, Via Sports made moves to purchase the status in the third tier as they continue their rise to prominence.

Makolaโ€™s side has managed to buy the status of JMB FC, a team that was participating in the ABC Motsepe League Gauteng. Via Sports purchased the status with five matches played already in the Motsepe League. Makola has told FARPost that they have been searching for a team to buy to challenge themselves.

โ€œWe sat down as a team and just spoke about our ambitions. Playing in the SAB League, you must have a lot of players who are under the age of 21, and when we looked at our squad, most players are over that age,โ€ Makola said.

โ€œSo we felt it was going to be difficult to continue in the SAB League, also based on the growth that the team has made. We tried to buy the status of a few teams before the season started, but that was unsuccessful until JMB came on board.

โ€œWe also had a discussion with them to have a partnership for now because the season has already started, and when we prepared for the current season, we always knew that we were preparing for the ABC Motsepe League.โ€
