Egypt national team coach Hossam Hassan is sweating over the fitness of three of his players ahead of the crunch 2025 AFCON Group B clash against Bafana Bafana on Friday.
The Pharaohs began their quest for a record-extending eighth AFCON title with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe at the Grand Stade d’Agadir.
Captain Mohamed Salah proved the hero once again, slotting home a clinical finish deep into stoppage time to spare the Pharaohs from a frustrating opening-day draw.

Despite dominating possession and creating a flurry of chances, Egypt found themselves trailing early on. Young Africans forward Prince Dube stunned the favourites in the 20th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to flick the ball past goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy.

“I pray that these injuries are not serious,” Hassan told journalists. “Our medical staff is monitoring the situation closely and working on their recovery step-by-step. I hope they will be fit to return soon, as their presence makes a difference. The players are incredibly committed. I truly hope for a quick recovery for them.”
The legendary former Pharaohs striker singled out trio Emam Ashour—who was forced off early in the first half—left-back Mohamed Hamdi, and forward Mostafa Mohamed.
Meanwhile, Hassan has thrown his weight behind Mohammed El Shennawy and Mo Salah.
“Salah and El Shennawy performed very well in the last match. And I am pleased with their contribution,” Hassan said. “We faced a difficult opponent with a strong history against us, which led to us conceding the first goal. However, our overall performance was solid. While many teams in this tournament haven’t managed a single corner, we were consistently a threat.”<
The Pharaohs will face South Africa on Friday, December 26, in a highly anticipated Group B clash. The tie could determine the group’s top spot. The match is set for the Adrar Stadium in Agadir at 5PM [SA time].
