Polokwane City FC head coach Phuti Mohafe has spoken out about the possibility of losing Thabang Matuludi, with the January transfer window looming, revealing that the talented defender might not return to the club after AFCON.

Matuludi has been one of the standout players at Polokwane City, producing impressive performances at the right-back position under the guidance of Mohafe.

The 26-year-old’s consistent performances have caught the eye of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, who has called him in his squad in the past few months.

Matuludi is currently part of the Bafana squad participating in the ongoing 2025 AFCON in Morocco, scheduled for December and January. The pacey wing-back has featured in 10 matches across all competitions for PLK City and scored one goal in the 2025/26 campaign.

Following his rise to prominence over the past few years, Matuludi has attracted interest from various suitors, including Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

PK City head coach Mohafe has admitted that the Limpopo-born star may have played his last game for the club, predicting that a strong showing at AFCON will likely facilitate a move to an overseas outfit.”

“I’m always telling Matuludi that one day you will thank me for playing you there [converting him from right-winger to right-back],” Mohafe said of PrimeSportsWithMahlatse.

“Now he’s at AFCON, and I doubt he will come back, if he can get minutes, but it’s fine, I just hope that even if they see him, they can give him the last season with us, then I will say I’ve done my part in terms of promoting the boy.”

Matuludi will be aiming to follow the footsteps of Owisn Appollis, who made a name for himself at Polokwane City before completing a big move to Pirates in the previous transfer window.
