Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien has admitted to slow adaptation at the club and the difficulties of cementing a regular place.

Basadien has struggled to cement his place in the starting line-up, with Aubrey Modiba being the preferred choice in the left-back position for Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso.

The 29-year-old has subsequently lost his place in the Hugo Broos Bafana Bafana squad and has missed out on the 2025 AFCON, which is underway in Morocco.

Previously, Cardoso has also stated that Basadienโ€™s lack of game time is caused by Modibaโ€™s impressive form.

In an interview with the clubโ€™s latest edition of the Digital Magazine, Basadien has admitted that adapting to the Tshwane giants has taken some time.

WHY FAWAAZ BASADIEN HAS TAKEN TIME TO ADAPT AT MASANDAWANA

โ€œOf course, adapting to a new setup and earning your place in a team of such quality takes time,โ€ he said.

โ€œHowever, I understand and respect that I must fight for my place, as we have some exceptional defenders. That motivates me to work harder every day. I am also fully aware of the responsibility that comes with the badge.

โ€œI feel confident that my skills and experience can add value to what Sundowns want to achieve on the pitch and want to bring consistency, energy and leadership every time I step onto the field and help the team maintain our high standards.โ€

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS DEFENDER DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST FOOTBALLERS

The former Stellenbosch FC defender says he draws inspiration from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo to remain a true professional in the game of football.

โ€œWatching him [Ronaldo] taught me the importance of professionalism, discipline, and always striving to improve; lessons I carry into my own game every day,โ€ he added.

โ€œAt Sundowns, I am fortunate to train alongside world-class teammates whose dedication, intelligence and teamwork push me to raise my standards both on and off the pitch.โ€
