Newly appointed Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt has disclosed why he opted to take on the Cape Winelands-based outfit’s project following his departure from Durban City FC.

Stellies confirmed they have roped in the experienced mentor in a statement released on Tuesday morning.

Hunt replaces Steve Barker, who cut ties with Stellenbosch earlier this month after a nine-year marriage with the club. He was the longest-serving coach at the club, taking charge of 309 official matches.

This came after Barker decided to tender his resignation to join Tanzanian giants Simba SC, who had sacked their coach Dimitar Pantev just two months into his job.

‘THIS IS A FORWARD-THINKING CLUB WITH A CLEAR VISION’: GAVIN HUNT

Hunt stated that he chose to accept the Stellenbosch position because he has recognised that the side is an innovative club with a distinct vision.

โ€œI am honoured to be joining Stellenbosch FC at this exciting time. This is a forward-thinking club with a clear vision, and from my first conversations with the CEO and staff, I could sense the ambition and the support structures that are in place. This is crucial for any coach who wants to succeed,” said Hunt.

โ€œStellenbosch have built something special in recent years, and I am motivated to build on that foundation. Thereโ€™s plenty of work ahead of us, but I am energised by the challenge.

โ€œThe Winelands deserve success. Iโ€™m committed to giving everything I have to bring silverware and memorable moments to our supporters.โ€

Hunt’s first match in charge of Stellenbosch will be against Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership tie. This showdown will take place on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. The match will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, with the kick-off set for 19:30.
