From rival to teammate: Basadien reflects on his toughest battles against Mudau

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien has disclosed the reasons why he found Khuliso Mudau to be the toughest player to play against while he was still at his previous club.

The talented left-back joined Bafana Ba Style in July 2025 from Stellenbosch FC on a three-year deal with a renewal option.

However, since his arrival at Masandawana, Basadien has struggled for game time, having only featured in seven games across all competitions.

The 29-year-old’s lack of game time at Sundowns has raised the eyebrows of many football fanatics and has cost him his place in the Bafana Bafana squad, which is currently in Morocco for the 2025 AFCON tournament.

According to local reports, Basadien might be sent out on loan in the January transfer window period with the aim of getting more game time. However, despite the rumours, the player has vowed to fight for his place at Sundowns when the PSL resumes later this month.

Before joining the Brazilians, Basadien also had stints with teams such as Milano United, Ubuntu Cape Town, Steenberg United, and the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.

BASADIEN SINGLES OUT FACTORS THAT MAKES MUDAU TOUGHEST PLAYER TO PLAY AGAINST

Basadien mentioned that Mudau, currently with the national team at AFCON, is a challenging player to handle due to his speed, positioning, and recovery, which makes it hard to surpass him.

“Khuliso Mudau was always a challenge. His pace, positioning and recovery made it difficult to get the better of him,” said Basadien in the latest Sundowns magazine edition.

“Watching him play pushed me to improve my own game and now, as teammates, I am excited to learn from his experience and integrate that into my own performances.”

Sundowns will return to action on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, when they face Orbit College FC at home in the Betway Premiership tie. The kick off is at 19:30.
