‘I don’t understand how CAF allowed that’: Hugo Broos

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos speaking at an AFCON presser

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has raised two fresh concerns following the team’s switch to Rabat, Morocco. South Africa is set to face Cameroon in an AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash at the El Medina Stadium this Sunday at 9:00 PM.

Having been based in Marrakech for the duration of AFCON 2025, the squad only relocated to the capital on Friday.

During the group stages, Bafana Bafana played their opening fixtures against Zimbabwe and Angola in Marrakech, with their third match taking place in Agadir.

“I want to say that I’m not so happy with the current situation,” he told the media. “We are 45 minutes away from our training pitch. So that means that, like yesterday, we were more than three hours away to have training. [A] 45 minutes to drive, one hour, 50 minutes training, and another 45 minutes to drive. It doesn’t make me happy.”

WHAT TWO CONCERNS DID HUGO BROOS RAISE IN RABAT

The AFCON 2017 champion with Cameroon expressed concern upon hearing that Morocco might use its training base. If Bafana progress, they will face the hosts in the quarterfinal.

“And certainly not that if my information is right. Cameroon, and we have to train in the base camp of Morocco, our next opponent. I don’t understand why CAF allowed that. I have to say that because it makes me unhappy.”

Nonetheless, the 73-year-old coach stated that he will show no mercy when facing the West African nation. He understands how his success in 2017 endeared him to the hearts of Cameroonians. However, he assures he will not be doing his former team any favours.

“If you win an AFCON with a country, there’s always a little place in your heart that stays for the rest of your life. And that’s the case also with Cameroon and me. It will always be there, but tomorrow I can’t have mercy on them. I want to win the game tomorrow because I’m the coach from South Africa now.

“But it’s a special game. I have to say that doesn’t mean we won’t fight for tomorrow.”
