Sundowns move in for R58 million Colombian striker

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly finalising a blockbuster move for Colombian striker Brayan León, with the Chloorkop-based giants set to pay a substantial R58 million fee to secure his services from Independiente Medellín.

The Brazilians are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the remaining part of their season and have turned to the 25-year-old striker. Coach Miguel Cardoso has identified their strikeforce as one of the departments that needs some additions.

Leon’s arrival could further limit playing opportunities for Peter Shalulile while providing more competition for gamer time to the likes of Iqraam Rayners, Arthur Sales and Lebo Mothiba.

According to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Leon is on his way to Chloorkop in a deal that includes a sell-on clause.

“After fullback Juan Arizala sold to Udinese as revealed last week, Independiente Medellin prepare one more sale,” Romano said.

“Brayan Leon leaves the club to join Mamelodi Sundowns for $3.5m package plus sell-on clause.”

Leon managed 13 league goals and nine assists in 40 appearances during the 2025 season as Independiente finished the season eighth on the 20-team table. Having never plied his trade outside Colombia in his career, he has been playing top-flight league football since 2021 and has previously turned out for Deportivo Pereira and Junior FC.

His current Independiente contract was set to expire in June 2027. Yet to be capped at international level by Colombia, the striker had the 2025 season as arguably his best ever in his career as per his statistics.

Sundowns still have one slot for a foreign player in their squad and that will make them able to accommodate Leon. Marcelo Allende, Sales, Miguel Reisinho and Nuno Santos occupy the other slots reserved for non-South African players.

But the Colombian’s arrival would mean they will be no space for midfielder Matias Esquivel who returns from a short-lived loan stint at Greek side AE Kifisia FC.
