Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United attacker Kurt Lentjies has bagged a coaching job with the PSL side AmaZulu FC.

Lentjies is taking over the coaching role in the AmaZulu’s DStv Diski Challenge side with the hope of turning the club into one of the competitive sides in the PSL reserve league.

Usuthu are positioned seventh on the DDC table with 17 points after winning five matches, drawing two, and suffering five defeats in 12 games played so far. Lentjies is taking the job alongside Orlando Pirates legend Thabo Mngomeni, who will serve as his assistant coach.

The coaching duo will work with Thami Gwala and Diana Masaire, who will assume the roles of goalkeeper coach and performance analyst, respectively. Before joining AmaZulu, Lentjies was unattached after parting with the ABC Motsepe League side FC Ravens a few months ago.

In a move to forge ahead with steady growth to develop some of the top players in South Africa, the KZN-based outfit announced the arrival of Lentjies and Mngomeni on Monday.

AMAZULU ANNOUNCED THE APPOINTMENT OF KURT LENTJIES

“AmaZulu FC’s reserve team has kicked off their 2026 calendar with four key technical appointments, headlined by the arrival of DDC Head Coach Kurt Lentjies and his assistant Thabo Mngomeni,” AmaZulu said in a statement.

“The duo is joined by Thami Gwala as goalkeeper coach and Diana Masaire as performance analyst, completing a reinforced technical team tasked with guiding Usuthu’s Diski Challenge squad forward. These appointments follow recent structural changes within the club, made ahead of the resumption of Diski Challenge action after AmaZulu collected 15 points from 12 outings in the opening phase of the campaign.

“Lentjies, 40, brings valuable experience and a well-rounded understanding of KwaZulu-Natal football. The former Chippa United tactician also spent six seasons at Maritzburg United during his playing career, while his colleagues boast a wealth of knowledge in their respective capacities.

“Lentjies and Bafana Bafana legend Mngomeni recently worked together at ABC Motsepe League outfit FC Ravens, while KwaZulu-Natal-born Gwala and Masaire joined the club from Durban City FC and TS Galaxy FC respectively.

“The newly assembled technical team will soon be called into action, with AmaZulu set to host Orlando Pirates in their first league fixture of the year on Sunday.”

AmaZulu director of football Pedro Dias welcomed the appointments, expressing confidence in their collective expertise. “We are pleased with the appointment of all four members of the technical team.

“We are confident that their expertise, along with that of their colleagues who form part of the system, will greatly benefit our young team, as well as support our vision of funnelling exciting talent into the first team in the long term,” said Dias.
