FÉS, Morocco — Former AmaZulu FC head coach Pablo Franco Martin has joined the growing chorus of voices praising South African star Thembinkosi Lorch, following the attacker’s impact at Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.

The Spanish tactician, who spent 18 months in the Betway Premiership, reflected on Lorch’s transition from Mamelodi Sundowns to the Botola Pro. According to Martin, Lorch’s success in North Africa is no surprise given the high level of quality he displayed during his time in the PSL and on the continental stage.

His familiarity with Lorch predates his stint in South Africa. ‘Cijimpi’, as he was affectionately known at Usuthu, recalled facing the winger during a high-stakes CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final when he was at the helm of Tanzanian giants Simba SC.

“As such a player, I know him well because not only the time in South Africa, but also before in CAF, in the quarter-final, I played against him, Simba against Orlando Pirates,” Martin told FARPost. “Since then, I have known him well. I know about his quality, one of the most talented players in South Africa.”

LORCH ADAPTING TO THE BOTOLA PRO

Lorch, who made his move to Casablanca permanent in August 2025 after a stellar loan spell and an eye-catching performance at the FIFA Club World Cup, has become a talisman for Wydad.

The 32-year-old has already netted five goals and provided four assists in the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign.

Martin highlighted that Lorch’s ‘different style’ has been the key to conquering a league known for its defensive rigour and physical intensity. He noted Lorch’s impressive adaptation to the physicality of the Moroccan league and his ability to handle the pressure of playing for one of Africa’s most demanding fanbases.

“He’s adapting not only physically but mentally to this game. He’s capable of making the most with his conditions, with his quality, to score goals, to assist, and to be a very important and decisive player for Wydad right now.”

Lorch’s form has propelled Wydad to the summit of the Botola Pro table after eight games. They are yet to be beaten this season, winning six of their games.

With Wydad competing in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages and chasing a domestic league title, the Free State-born star appears to have found the perfect environment to reignite the form that once saw him crowned the PSL Player of the Season.
