Highly-rated former Cape Town Spurs strength and conditioning coach, Sonwabile ‘Sonny’ Booi, has left Parow for Observatory to join Cape Town City FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Following a season with CT Spurs in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Booi switched to CT City, where the race to win promotion to the Betway Premiership is the hot mission.

Booi described the move as ‘very fortunate,’ after Spurs were relegated to the third-tier ABC Motsepe League last season. “Yes, I have joined City. I am so grateful to Cape Town City for the wonderful opportunity,” Booi said to FARPost.

The Welkom-born technician marks his second stint with City. He first emerged at the club as an intern while he was still a student at the University of Cape Town, where he picked up an honours degree in Biokinetics in Health and Wellness.

Following City’s shock relegation to the MFC, the Citizens faced a rude awakening in the opening spell of South Africa’s unforgiving second division.

After a run of six games without a win, Jan Vreman’s team launched an exciting revival towards the end of 2025.

The corner was turned in the 3-2 win over Midlands Wanderers, lifting City up the table with five wins in seven games. The 2017 Telkom Knockout champions and 2028 MTN8 holders are currently in 4th place with 22 points. They have played 14 matches (6 wins, 4 draws, 4 losses), and are just five points shy of the league leaders, Milford FC.

Meanwhile, the Citizens have bolstered the squad. They have beefed up with former Bidvest Wits, Marumo Gallants, Orlando Pirates, and Sekhukhune United midfielder Miguel Timm. The Durban-born veteran has been around. The 33-year-old number six has over 260 games as a professional footballer in South Africa’s top flight. His experience includes a spell with Arizona United in  America’s United Soccer League [USL].

CT City have also signed the former TS Galaxy attacking midfielder-cum striker, Dzenan Zajmovic. He arrived in Observatory after Simon van Duivenbooden and Walter Bwalya’s signings did not work out.
