Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates winger Tshepang Moremi has explained what gives the Soweto giants the edge over Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title.
The Buccaneers have had a promising first round of the campaign, establishing themselves as one of the consistent teams in the PSL after displaying an enterprising brand of football.
Pirates finished the first half of the season sitting at the summit of the league table with 28 points in 12 matches. They registered nine wins, one draw, and two defeats under the guidance of head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who joined the club in the off-season from Marumo Gallants.
The Soweto giants have a chance to end Sundowns’ dominance, which has seen them win the league for eight consecutive seasons. Interestingly, Masandawana have had an unusual start to the current season, collecting 26 points and trailing Pirates by two points after 13 games.
WHAT MOREMI SAID ABOUT THE TITLE RACE
With the second round of the season resuming in the next few days, Moremi has weighed in on the title race, declaring that Sundowns’ commitment in the CAF Champions League might give Pirates the advantage to clinch the elusive Premiership trophy.

The left-footed attacker is in his first season with the Sea Robbers after signing in July from AmaZulu FC. Moremi signed with Pirates alongside other big names such as Oswin Appollis, Sipho Mbule, Kamogelo Sebelebele, and Sihle Nduli.
“For the league, we have to make sure we’ll push hard even though it’s not going to be easy, but in the second round we’ll see we are going, but I trust my team,” Moremi said on PrimeSportsWithMahlatse.
“So with Sundowns travelling [on the African continent] takes time and comes with fatigue. And for us, we won’t travel that much; we are going to be around South Africa. We just need to be ready mentally, know what we want and what we are aiming for.”
Moremi further spoke out on the chances of winning all domestic trophies, revealing that it’s possible to make a clean sweep. “For me, it’s possible [to win everything], because of the team we have, I can bet on it, so I think this is our season.”
