The Portuguese top-flight side AVS Futebol SAD has confirmed the contract termination of South African winger Kobamelo Kodisang, who was at the club on a loan deal from Mamelodi Sundowns.

This comes after four days when FARPost broke the story that the 26-year-old’s stint in Europe is set to be cut short and that he will return to his parent club, Sundowns.

โ€œIt looks like Kobamelo Kodisang will be back at Sundowns in this January transfer window. At this stage, itโ€™s unclear why heโ€™s returning to his parent club,โ€ the source told this publication.

The former South African junior international had joined the Portuguese side on a season-long deal, with an option to purchase in July 2025. However, his contract has been terminated with less than six months left.

During Kodisang’s tenure at AVS Futebol SAD, the talented winger featured in five games and provided one goal across all competitions.

Kodisang departed from Bafana Ba Style on loan to seek greener pastures after facing difficulties with game time under the tutelage of Miguel Cardoso, having joined the Chloorkop-based outfit at the beginning of the 2024/25 PSL campaign from the Portuguese side Moreirense FC.

Sundowns roped in Kodisang following his stellar displays in Moreirense colors. He had found the back of the net on 14 occasions and weighed in with six assists after 67 games in his two-year stay at the club.

THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM AVS FUTEBOL SAD’S ON KOBAMELO KODISANG’ CONTRACT TERMINATION

AVS Futebol SAD has officially announced that they have cut ties with Kodisang and wished him the best in his future endeavors as he returns to Masandawana.

This move for Kodisang to return to Sundowns came as a shock to many football fanatics, given the fact that he hardly had game time since his arrival at Masandawana.

“AVS Futebol SAD, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kobamelo Kodisang have agreed to terminate the temporary loan agreement between the two clubs,” reads the club’s statement released on Sunday, 11 January 2025.

“Therefore, Kodisang is no longer an AFS player. The club wishes him well and thanks him for his services.”

In his football career, Kodisang also had stints with the now-defunct South African teams Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits, as well as AD Sanjoanense and SC Braga B in Portugal.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE INFLUENCED KODISANG’S RETURN TO MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

With the news that the club’s winger Thapelo Maseko is set to join Cypriot club AEL Limassol, this might be one of the reasons Kodisang has returned to the club earlier than expected.

Maseko has also struggled for game time under the leadership of Cardoso and has only played seven matches across all competitions in the current season.

If Maseko’s move to AEL Limassol materializes, the 2023 AFCON bronze medalist with Bafana Bafana will join his South African forward Luther Singh at the club.

In addition, Masandawana has also strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Monnapule Saleng, who plays as a winger, from the reining Carling Knockout champions Orlando Pirates. Saleng was at Orbit College FC on a loan deal from the Buccaneers before his surprising move to Sundowns.

On the other hand, the club announced the signing of Colombian striker Brayan Leรณn this morning. He joins Sundowns from Independiente Medellรญn, as the Cardoso-coached side aims to defend their league title.

Sundowns will return to action on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, when they face Orbit College FC at home in the Betway Premiership tie. The kick off for this particular showdown is at 19:30.

As things stand, the Brazilians are placed second on the Betway Premiership table with 26 points after 13 games. They are two points behind the log leaders Pirates, who have a game in hand.
