Mamelodi Sundowns and Mosa Lebusa cut ties

Mamelodi Sundowns bid farewell to Mosa Lebusa

After a trophy-laden seven-year stay at Chloorkop, veteran defender Mosa Lebusa has officially parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, with a move to Stellenbosch FC reportedly in the final stages.

Since his arrival at Masandawana, Lebusa managed to make 207 appearances, contributing nine goals and providing four assists in his seven-year tenure. Sundowns confirmed the exit of the experienced centre back on Saturday, 17 January.

Lebusa clinched several titles with Masandawana, including seven league titles, two Nedbank Cup trophies, one MTN8 title, and one African Football League trophy.

Moreover, he was part of the team that won the 2019/20 Telkom Knockout and the 2022 Carling Black Label Cup.

As a result, the 33-year-old leaves the Chloorkop-based outfit as one of the most decorated players in the club’s recent history, since joining from Ajax Cape Town in 2018.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE INFLUENCED MOSA LEBUSA’S DEPARTURE AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

However, game time became increasingly difficult to come by over the last two seasons. The arrival of younger talent and a shift in tactical preferences saw the veteran slip down the pecking order, making a move away from the capital inevitable for the sake of regular football.

The departure adds significant fuel to the reports linking Lebusa with a move to Stellenbosch. The Winelands-based side is reportedly keen to add veteran leadership to their youthful backline as they look to build on their recent successes in both the league and continental competitions.

For Stellenbosch, acquiring a player of Lebusa’s pedigree—who boasts extensive experience in the CAF Champions League—would be a major statement of intent.

Sundowns fans will remember Lebusa for his composure on the ball, his aerial prowess, and his ability to lead from the back during high-pressure encounters. The defender’s exit marks the end of an era for the Masandawana faithful.

As the Betway Premiership transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on the Stellenbosch to see if Lebusa officially puts pen to paper with Gavin Hunt’s side.
