Aden McCarthy’s goal hand Chiefs narrow win over Arrows

Kaizer Chiefs secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night at FNB Stadium thanks to a solitary goal from Aden McCarthy.

Amakhosi closed the gap of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Orlando Pirates after moving to the third position with 27 points in 14 matches played.

The Glamour Boys resumed action in the second round of the season after a long break due to the 2025 AFCON tournament, which was won by Senegal this past weekend.

Chiefs welcomed Arrows at home, aiming to have a flying start and collect maximum points to close gaps on title contenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The Soweto giants came into the clash against the KZN-based outfit winless in their last two league matches after playing two goalless draws against TS Galaxy and Chippa United.

Chiefs last collected three points with a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City FC on the 4th of November 2025, a form they will be looking to overturn in the remaining six months of the 2025/26 season.

The 2025 Nedbank Cup champions had a promising start to the match against Arrows, creating most of the scoring chances; however, they couldn’t hit the back of the net.

Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through talented defender Aden McCarthy, who converted a header from a set piece. The hosts went into the half-time break leading 1-0 against Manqoba Mngqithi’s charges.

In the second-half, the tempo of the match dropped drastically as Chiefs looked to consolidate and walk away with a crucial win against Abafana Bes’thende.

With Chiefs pushing for another goal to put the game to bed, they brought in highly-rated winger Mfundo Vilakazi and Dillan Solomons in place of Mduduzi Shabalala and Thabiso Monyane.

Kaizer Chiefs held on to their slender lead to defeat Arrows 1-0 and move to the third position on the log. In another match on Tuesday night, Stellenbosch FC defeated Sekhukhune United 1-0 courtesy of a debut goal from Pirates loanee Tshegofatso Mabasa.
