Mamelodi Sundowns have made a major decision on the future of Divine Lunga, securing the defender on a new contract that will keep him at the club beyond the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

The Brazilians offered Lunga a new contract as they look to compete for all trophies on offer in the second round of the season. Sundowns are chasing the ninth league title in a row, the Nedbank Cup, and the CAF Champions League title.

In a bid to continue building a strong squad, Sundowns acquired the services of Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng, Khulumani Ndamane, and Brayan Leon in the current January transfer window.

The Tshwane giants made the marquee signings, sending a message to rivals about their intentions to maintain their status as the dominant force in South African football for the past decade.

On Monday night, Sundowns kicked off the second-half of the campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Orbit College in the Premiership at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, thanks to goals from Arthur Sales and debutant Brayan Leon.

SUNDOWNS TIE DOWN DIVINE LUNGA WITH A NEW CONTRACT

The win against relegation-threatened Orbit saw Sundowns reclaim the top spot on the log standings after moving to 29 points in 14 matches, while Pirates dropped to second place with 28 points having played 12 games.

With Sundowns aiming for a solid display in the second round, they have moved swiftly to tie down one of their defenders, Lunga, with a new deal.

In the current season, the Zimbabwean international has featured in eight matches across all competitions as he’s competing with Aubrey Modiba, Fawaaz Basadien, Asekho Tiwani, and Thato Sibiya for a place in the starting line-up at left-back.

Lunga’s agent, Mike Makaab, has told FARPost that the former Golden Arrows wing-back signed a new contract with Masandawana, although he couldn’t reveal the contract details of the player.

“I can tell you that Divine Lunga has signed a completely new contract with Mamelodi Sundowns, he’s definitely on the plans of the team going forward,” Makaab said. “That’s all I can tell you. I’ll leave contract details to Sundowns whenever they make the announcement.”
