Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane has begun a new journey to train shot stoppers after opening specialised training classes.

Mabokgwane has been unattached since he parted ways with Betway Premiership side Richards Bay in 2024.

In his career spanning over 12 years, the 38-year-old has featured for clubs such as Bidvest Wits, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Pirates, Cape Town City, Baroka FC and Black Leopards. His first professional club was Mamelodi Sundowns.

Despite securing a job as a pundit for SABC Sport, Mabokgwane still insists he has not officially retired from playing and is still available if offers come.

However, in the meantime, Mabokgwane has started a Jacco Specialised goalkeeping training that specialises in one-on-one sessions with both male and female goalkeepers.

The 45-minute session is held at Westenburg Stadium, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, every weekday and weekend from 07:00 to 17:00.

“The plan is to have an academy. But for now, as a start, we thought we should have coaching clinics,” Mabokgwane told FARPost.

WHAT INSPIRED JACKSON MABOKGWANE TO COME UP WITH THE TRAINING INITIATIVE

“But since I also have some time on my hands, I offered my services to train goalkeepers and start them young. So, from as early as five or six years old. I am open to older age groups as well.

“The reason for that is that there are times when there are certain goalkeepers who are out of contracts where you need to train by yourself. So for me, it’s all about helping my fellow goalkeepers. The main aim obviously is the academy, which will start in a couple of months,” he added.

“What inspired the whole thing is that in our country, if you look at the PSL teams, even the Motsepe Foundation Championship, most teams are dominated by foreign goalkeepers. That’s not good for our country, and that’s not good for the development of goalkeepers.”
