Retired Orlando Pirates star Mpho Makola has weighed in on Tshegofatso Mabasa’s loan move to Stellenbosch FC, stating it’s a ‘golden opportunity’ for the striker to rediscover his former self under less pressure.
Mabasa was unveiled along with Kobamelo Kodisang and Mosa Lebusa. He joined Stellenbosch from Orlando Pirates on loan until the end of the season.
Mabasa’s move to Stellies was prompted by his struggles for game time under Abdeslam Ouaddou. He featured in nine games across all competitions for Pirates and scored four goals.
And on Tuesday night, Mabasa made a huge statement of intent after scoring his first goal in his debut match for Stellenbosch FC, as they beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
WHAT MPHO MAKOLA SAID

And former Pirates midfielder Makola told FARPost that the 29-year-old’s move to Stellenbosch is not a downgrade, but a chance for him to soul-search.
“Mabasa’s loan move to Stellenbosch is timeous. He needed a new environment that appreciates him, and this move reduces pressure on him,” Mpho Makola told FARPost.
“He needed to regain confidence, and in Cape Town, he won’t have the same pressure as in Johannesburg or Soweto where you can meet supporters demanding answers at any time. Mabasa is a deadly striker, but the environment has to aid him by accepting that there are highs and lows,” Makola added.
MAKOLA DRAWS LESSONS FROM HIS SWITCH FROM PIRATES TO CT CITY
Makola drew from his own experience when he left Orlando Pirates to join Cape Town City FC in July 2019. He said: “My move to Cape Town City in 2019 was refreshing and gave me a fresh perspective. I believe that could be helpful for Mabasa, and Gavin Hunt is the right man to help Mabasa regain happiness and enjoy game time.”
Mabasa left Pirates, who are satisfied with how they fared so far, having already won the MTN8 and Carling Knockout titles. As it stands, they are in a strong position to win the Betway Premiership title, albeit with stiff competition from Mamelodi Sundowns. They are currently second on the table with 28 points and two games in hand.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC, now led by Gavin Hunt, will be counting on Mabasa to turn things around. The club has been struggling, fighting relegation with Chippa United and Magesi FC. As such, Mabasa’s arrival could be the boost they need to end their troubles, while also giving him a chance to regain his rhythm and confidence when it matters most.
