Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has explained why the club is edging closer to claiming a second CAF Champions League title.

The Betway Premiership side will resume with CAF duties on Friday when they host Sudan’s Al-Hilal at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday evening.

The match could have an impact on the Group C standings as both teams are on four points from two matches played.

Sundowns started the Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over DR Congo’s Saint-Éloi Lupopo and a 0-0 draw against MC Alger, coached by Rulani Mokwena.

WHY DENIS ONYANGO BELIEVES THIS COULD BE THE SEASON FOR MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Onyango, who was part of the 2026 squad that won the Champions League title, believes this could just be their season to win Africa’s biggest club football competition again.

“I think the boys all know what to do. Last season we got very close to winning the Champions League,” he said.

“I believe that this season we can do it because we have moved closer. We have been knocked out a couple of times in the quarter-finals, in the semi-finals, and we lost in the final.

“So we are getting there, and the boys know that the task ahead is very difficult. But we just need to keep fighting.”

“African football is very difficult, and you can never know who is stronger. Even the strong teams lose, and the mentality must be to always keep winning and try to get results at home because away from home is always difficult.

“But for me, the message is always to fight for the badge and change the way the badge looks right now. It’s for the boys to make history because it’s very important to give the best to the team, and that’s what they are doing.”
