Chiefs register first win in CAF Confederation Cup group stage

Kaizer Chiefs beat Zesco United 1-0 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday afternoon, to register their first win of the CAF Confederation Cup group D campaign.

Pule Mmodi scored the only goal of the match as early as the second minute after capitalising on a rebound from a Glody Lilepo attempt.

Chiefs made three changes to the side that beat Golden Arrows in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Khanyisa Mayo, Mfundo Vilakazi and Dillan Solomons all started for the club while Thabiso Monyane, Mduduzi Shabalala and Glody Lilepo were relegated to the bench.

It only took two minutes for Kaizer Chiefs to open the scoring through Pule Mmodi, after a rebound from Flavio Silva’s shot. The home side piled on more pressure in search of an equaliser.

Zesco shouted for a penalty when Amine Hiver was challenged inside the box, but referee Noris Arissol waved play on.

Chiefs striker Flavio Silva nearly scored after a through pass from Lebohang Maboe, but was stopped via a good tackle from Kabaso Chongo.

The home side made two changes five minutes before the half-time break, bringing in Derrick Obame for Peter Musukuma and Emmanuel Mwanza for Vitalis Ganter. Amakhosi went into the half-time break leading 1-0.

KAIZER CHIEFS HOLD ON TO A HARD FOUGHT VICTORY OVER ZESCO UNITED

The Soweto giants made two changes at the start of the second half. Lilepo came in for Mayo, while Monyane came in for Solomons.

The home side almost got an equaliser after Hiver unleashed a powerful shot from outside the 18-yard area in the 67th minute, but missed the target.

Zesco pushed for an equaliser, Chiefs managed to hold on to the pressure and secure the much-needed maximum points.

Despite the win, Chiefs remain third in the group with four points, equal with Zamalek, who are in action on Sunday evening.
