Former Kaizer Chiefs midfield anchor Cole Alexander has officially confirmed his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades.

The 36-year-old veteran has been a free agent since leaving Polokwane City FC in August 2025. Alexander returned to Rise and Shine for a second stint at the start of the 2024/25 PSL season, joining Phuti Mohafeโ€™s side after a spell in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF.

Alexanderโ€™s retirement marks the end of an era for one of South Africaโ€™s most industrious midfielders. He is known for his tireless work rate and tactical discipline.

He enjoyed a nomadic yet successful career, representing some of the country’s clubs, including SuperSport United, Ajax Cape Town, and Bidvest Wits, among others.

COLE ALEXANDER’S HEARTFELT MESSAGE AS HE CONFIRMS HIS RETIREMENT

In an emotional statement released on Tuesday, Alexander reflected on the highs and lows of his journey, acknowledging that although his final chapter at City didn’t go as planned, he remains at peace.

“After nearly two decades in professional football, today I officially announce my retirement. Although I didn’t want my career to end the way my last season went, I’ve learned that not everything is in our control. That final chapter and the environment I was in, doesn’t define the journey I’ve been blessed to live,” said Alexander.

“This is for the fans, supporters, and loved ones who’ve been with me through it all, even when you might have already sensed this day was coming. Thank you for nearly 20 years of belief and love.

“There’s so much more gratitude in me for so many more people and organisations I didn’t name. To the development structures, clubs, coaches, teachers, uncles and aunties, my church, my community, my family, and everyone who poured into me: I salute you.

“Your support was my strength. I humbly ask you to keep standing with me as I step into what’s next. No man is an island, I still need you. FootbalI gave me more than I ever deserved: lessons, brotherhood, purpose, and memories I’ll carry forever. This chapter didn’t end the way I wanted, but God’s not done writing my story.”
