Why AmaZulu’s deal for Zim star Takunda Benhura is on hold

The highly anticipated transfer of former Ngezi Platinum Stars striker Takunda Benhura to AmaZulu FC has been placed on hold. While the two clubs had previously reached an agreement, FARPost has uncovered the details behind the sudden delay.

Initially, everything appeared set for the 24-year-old attacker to make his move to South Africa. The agreement included a two-year contract with an option to extend, and a January 1st start date, aligned with the opening of the mid-season transfer window.

Speculation regarding Benhura’s departure from Ngezi has been circulating for months. The forward’s stock rose significantly following a stellar 2023 campaign, where he claimed the league’s Golden Boot with 13 goals. He also led Ngezi Platinum Stars to a league title and secured the club’s qualification for the CAF Champions League.

Despite heavy interest following his 2023 Cosafa Cup appearance for the Warriors, Ngezi managed to retain their star man for another season. It wasn’t until late 2025 that the Zimbabwean champions finally agreed to sanction his move to the Durban-based side.

Benhura was expected to link up with fellow countryman Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya at Usuthu. Ngwenya, who joined from FC Platinum during the off-season, has hit the ground running in the Betway Premiership, netting six goals and providing one assist in his first 12 appearances.

WHY TAKUNDA BENHURA’S MOVE TO AMAZULU HIT A SNAG

Indications suggest the striker was carrying an injury, prompting Usuthu to decide against proceeding with the deal at this time. However, the Betway Premiership club will monitor the talented marksman’s progress.

There are conflicting reports on the estimated recovery time: some sources suggest it could take up to three months, while others cite a month-long recovery period.

News that Benhura signed for the Durban-based side started to make rounds on social media last year when the club signed Mason Mushore from Highlanders. Mushore, a holding midfielder, has since joined Usuthu.
