Sekhukhune sign Lesiba Nku amid Stellenbosch exodus

Sekhukhune United have finalised a deal for former Stellenbosch FC winger Lesiba Nku on a free transfer, ending months of uncertainty regarding the player’s future in the Cape Winelands.

The move sees Nku follow in the footsteps of teammates Sanele Barns, who is on his way to Richards Bay FC, and Thato Khiba, who is reportedly finalising a move to Babina Noko as part of a swap deal.

The 29-year-old has reportedly undergone a routine medical and agreed to personal terms. For the Limpopo-born attacker, the move is an opportunity to ‘resurrect his career’ after a challenging period under former coach Steve Barker at Stellies.

Despite arriving from Mamelodi Sundowns with high expectations in January last year, Nku struggled to cement a place in the Stellies starting XI. The frustration culminated late last year when he and teammate Lehlohonolo Mojela were reportedly instructed to train away from the first-team squad.

Nku was transfer-listed by the club, but they later sought to recall him at the insistence of new coach Gavin Hunt. By joining Sekhukhune, Nku will reunite with Mojela, who has already integrated into the Limpopo outfit this month.

LESIBA NKU EAGER TO REDISCOVER FORM

Sekhukhune’s technical team would be betting on a change of scenery to help Nku rediscover the explosive form he showcased during his tenure with Marumo Gallants. It was there that he made his name, playing a pivotal role in the club’s historic run to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals three seasons ago.

Hunt has been making changes at Stellies. While the club has offloaded a number of players, it has been aggressive in the market. They recently secured high-profile signings such as Tshegofatso Mabasa, Asekho Tiwani, Kobamelo Kodisang, and Mosa Lebusa.

With Nku’s signing, Sekhukhune is adding a seasoned campaigner with continental experience. His arrival is expected to provide much-needed width and a goal-scoring threat as the club looks to maintain its push for a top-three finish in the second half of the Betway Premiership season.
