Bafana Bafana winger Mihlali Mayambela is officially a free agent after parting ways with Cypriot giants Aris Limassol. Limassol confirmed on Thursday that they have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the 29-year-old’s contract six months early.

The move brings an end to a highly successful three-season stint in Cyprus, where Mayambela helped the club achieve success. Since joining in 2022, Mayambela transformed into a vital cog in the Aris attack.

The South African international leaves behind an impressive legacy. In 125 appearances, he has scored 19 goals and provided 15 assists for the club. He also lifted the 2023 Cypriot First Division title and the 2023 Cypriot Super Cup.

In an official statement, the club expressed its gratitude. “Aris Limassol FC announces the mutual termination of its agreement with South African winger Mihlali Mayambela. The 29-year-old forward joined the club in the summer of 2022 and played a key role in its historic achievements. During his time with Aris, Mayambela contributed to the team’s Cypriot First Division title, the Super Cup victory, and competed in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Over his three and a half years at the club, Mayambela made a total of 125 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 15 assists. Aris Limassol expresses its sincere gratitude to Mihlali Mayambela for his valuable contribution to the club and wishes him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

The club also confirmed the departure of Georgian striker Giorgi Kvilitaia, signalling a significant squad overhaul for the Limassol outfit.

NEW CLUB FOR MAYAMBELA

The talented winger has been linked to Omonia Nicosia previously. Having missed out on the recent AFCON squad, the attacker is reportedly determined to reclaim his place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana setup.

He will be eager to move to a club that offers him regular game time and the exposure needed to return to the national team. Mayambela is eyeing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

His experience in the UEFA Europa League group stages makes him a marquee target for any side looking to add tactical maturity and pace to their flanks.
