Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has shared his insights on Amakhosi’s prospects in the intense Betway Premiership title race.
The Glamour Boys increased their chances of challenging for the league after defeating Marumo Gallants 1-0 at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chiefs picked up crucial three points after Glody Lilepo netted the only goal of the match with a powerful long-range strike in the second half. The maximum points against Gallants saw Chiefs leapfrog arch-rivals Orlando Pirates to take second place on the log standings. Chiefs have collected 30 points in 25 matches and are two points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have accumulated 32 points in the same number of games.
Meanwhile, Chiefs are now one point ahead of Pirates, who collected 29 points after playing 13 matches so far. The Naturena-based side has joined the race for the Premiership title, which has been heating up over the past few weeks.
Chiefs are aiming to win their first league title for the first time since 2015 under the guidance of Stuart Baxter. In the past two seasons, the Soweto giants have finished outside of the top eight on the league table.
KAZE POURS COLD WATER ON CHIEFS’ TITLE CHANCES

With Chiefs establishing themselves as realistic title contenders, Kaze has watered down their possibilities of winning the league and said they are taking it one game at a time.
“I would say that it’s a big win [against Marumo Gallants], away from home on a difficult field, but we didn’t want to complain about the field and feel sorry for ourselves,” Kaze said.
“We are a big team, we need to play in every condition that we find ourselves in. I would say that this is a big win, and from what I saw today [Wednesday], I don’t think there are a lot of teams that are going to win on that field.
“We go game by game. At the end of last season, we had 32 points after 28 games; now we are on 30 points with 25 games. I feel it’s a big improvement, but we still have a big room for improvement, and we are going to compete every game.”
