Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has addressed the vocal section of fans calling for the return of former mentor Pitso Mosimane. The atmosphere at Loftus Versfeld turned sour last week Friday following a frustrating 2-2 draw against Sudanese side Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League.

As the final whistle blew, the stands echoed with chants of “Pitso! Pitso!”, a direct reference to the man who led the Brazilians to five league titles and a historic CAF Champions League trophy in 2016.

The chants for Mosimane come at a time when the legendary coach is linked with a sensational return to Chloorkop. The tension reached a boiling point last Friday when some fans allegedly harassed Sporting Director Flemming Berg after the Al Hilal match, prompting the club to issue a stern warning against “illegal behaviour and intimidation.”

Following Masandawana’s 2-1 loss to Al Hilal in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday night, Cardoso addressed the issue. The result saw Sundowns drop to second place as the Sudanese giants moved to the top of Group C.

WHAT CARDOSO SAID ABOUT SUNDOWNS FANS CHANTING FOR PITSO MOSIMANE

“When a team loses, there are a lot of fans who ask the coach to go back. I’ll not repeat what was said,” Cardoso told journalists. “There are places when teams lose, they call for my name. It’s good that people leave good memories in the clubs, and we should not regret or not respect the past. But also, respect the present.”

Despite the pressure on the Portuguese mentor, his side remains in a strong position on paper. Sundowns currently sit at the summit of the Betway Premiership, on track for another title. He will need to guide the Brazilians to wins away in DR Congo, where they face St Eloi Lupopo and a home clash against Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger.
