Amid soaring form and landmark achievements, Kaizer Chiefs sensation Mduduzi Shabalala remains unfazed by the mounting noise surrounding his potential inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Chiefs academy graduate reached a historic milestone on Sunday, clocking his 100th appearance for the Soweto giants at the age of just 22. The landmark moment took place at the buzzing Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, where Amakhosi edged Zesco United 1-0 in a crucial CAF Confederation Cup encounter.

When Shabalala was introduced in the second half, the stadium erupted. The deafening cheers from the stands were matched by a standing ovation from his teammates and technical staff in the dugoutโ€”a testament to the respect the youngster has earned at Naturena.

AJOURNEY DESTINED FOR STARDOM

Shabalalaโ€™s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. After tearing up the Diski Challenge, his first-team promotion was fast-tracked by former coach Arthur Zwane.

Since making his official debut in the 2022/23 season against Cape Town City FC, “Mdu” has never looked back. Speaking to FARPost in Durban following his century of matches, the humble playmaker chose to deflect the spotlight toward the club.

โ€œIt means a lot to me because playing for this team is something I have always wished for. I am very thankful to the team for giving me the opportunity to display my talent, because it was not easy to get here,โ€ Shabalala said.

With 11 goals and six assists to his name, Shabalala has become a non-negotiable starter under current head coach Khalil Ben Youssef. His consistent displays have made him a fan favourite for a spot in Hugo Broosโ€™s World Cup-bound squad.

Shabalala earned his sole international cap during Bafanaโ€™s 3-0 win over Rwanda last October, and his coach, Ben Youssef, is among those beating the drum for his inclusion in the global showpiece in North America.

MDU SHABALALA GROUNDED AMID BAFANA BAFANA HYPE

“I just hope he will continue and be part of Bafana in the World Cup,” Ben Youssef commented recently.

Despite the “wildcard” talk, Shabalala is refusing to let the hype go to his head.

โ€œAll the buzz does not affect me. I am only focused on working hard and raising my hand at the club, hoping that one day I will get the opportunity to represent my nation again,โ€ he maintained.

โ€œAs Chiefs players, we just need to take it one game at a time. Itโ€™s about treating every game as an important one, regardless of the competition.โ€

As he steps into his “second century” of appearances, the 22-year-oldโ€™s focus remains internal. If he continues to pull the strings for Amakhosi in Africa and at home, a seat on the plane to the World Cup may become an inevitability rather than a debate.
