Winger Thapelo Maseko broke his goal duck in the Cypriot First Division, scoring against Mihlali Mayambela‘s Omonia Nicosia on Wednesday night.

Maseko scored the winning goal for AEL Limassol as they sealed a 2-1 win in a Cyprus Cup quarter-final match, to advance to the semi-finals. The match was played at the GSP Stadium.

The 22-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns loanee emerged the toast of the night, scoring his first goal since switching to AEL Limassol on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Lรฉo Natel had put Limassol ahead after 17 minutes, and they held on for most of the game. When they thought they had snatched the win, Ryan Mmaee restored parity in stoppage time, forcing the match to extra time.

The speedy winger, Maseko, introduced in extra time, scored the winner for AEL Limassol in the 115th minute. That sealed the win. Fellow South African international Luther Singh was also in action for AEL Limassol. However, Mayambela was not in the Omonia Nicosia squad for the Cyprus Cup quarter-final.

MASEKO ESTABLISHING HIMSELF WELL AT AEL LIMASSOL

Maseko is establishing himself in the Cypriot First Division, having made appearances from the bench so far. He endured a rather tough 2025/26 campaign at Sundowns, finding himself down the pecking order in terms of team selection.

The talented winger possesses massive speed and is very good at exploiting opponents from the left wing. In addition to his strengths as a winger, Maseko can play as a left wing-back and can also be deployed as a striker.

Having been hailed as one of Sundowns’ prospects, Maseko also broke through to Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana setup, earning seven caps and playing a role in their bronze-medal win at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

AEL Limassol will be hoping he keeps the good vein of form and contributes to their Cypriot First Division campaign, where they are currently in seventh position with 30 points from 20 matches.
