South African international Bongokuhle Hlongwane is set to pair with a former Real Madrid star James Rodríguez at his MLS side, Minnesota United.

This comes after Minnesota United confirmed on Friday the high-profile signing of Colombian superstar and former Real Madrid playmaker James Rodríguez.

Rodríguez, the 2014 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner, arrives in MLS as a free agent after a stint with Liga MX side Club León.

The 34-year-old playmaker has signed a deal through June 2026, with a club option to extend until the end of the year.

For Hlongwane, affectionately known as Saniza, the arrival of a player of Rodríguez’s calibre is an exciting prospect. Since moving to the United States in 2022, Hlongwane, known for his explosive pace and exceptional work ethic, has become a vital cog in Minnesota’s attack.

Contracted until December 2027, the 25-year-old has 24 goals and assisted 13 times in 125 appearances for the club.

His new Colombian teammate, a classic ‘Number 10’ known for elite vision, brings creativity. At his peak, James commanded a market value of R1.6 billion at both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

With 127 goals and 161 assists in over 500 club games, his ability to thread needles is statistically among the best of his generation. Hlongwane’s ability to stretch defences and make darting runs into the box perfectly complements James’ preference for picking out runners from deep.

Speaking on the move, the Colombian captain expressed his hunger to make an immediate impact in the Twin Cities.

“I’m very happy for this new chapter in my life. I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all of the people who are putting their faith in me,” Rodríguez said in a club statement. “I’m looking forward to meeting all of the passionate

Minnesota fans because I’m also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field.”

Despite his market value dipping to R38 million in recent years, he remains the most decorated player to ever wear the Loons’ colours.
