Club legend Benedict Vilakazi declares that Orlando Pirates possess the “best attack in the country” and explains why the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title is destined for Parktown after a 14-year drought.
After 15 matches, the Sea Robbers sit top of the standings with 35 points, while reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns follow closely in second place on 32 points.
While Vilakazi backs Pirates as the most dangerous attacking side in Mzansi, it is Sundowns who currently lead the scoring charts with 24 goals, compared to Pirates’ 22.
Even so, Vilakazi feels the time has come for Pirates’ long league drought to finally end. The Buccaneers last lifted the South African league title in the 2011/12 season, sealing the championship on 19 May 2012 with a 4-2 victory over Golden Arrows.
BENEDICT VILAKAZI: SOMETHING GOOD IS HAPPENING IN THAT CAMP
“It is a must,” Vilakazi said on the Omniaudioafrica podcast. “Orlando Pirates need to win the league.
“You cannot be the best attacking team in the country and then not win the league. Right now, we are sitting at the top of the league because we are the best team when it comes to attack.

“We are doing so well so far. We have also just passed another stage of the Nedbank Cup. That means something good is happening in that camp. Coach [Abeslam] Ouadddou, keep working hard, keep pushing.
“I know that sometimes it is tough, sometimes the coach is tired, he does not want to do anything, sometimes the players’ bodies don’t want to take anything from anyone. The body is tired. You need to recover, but you need to push yourself.
“I am also your number one fan. I am saying to you guys, I am behind you. I know you can do it. I want you guys to go and win the league this season. This season the league is yours, Orlando Pirates,” Vilakazi concluded.
