Chiefs slump to back-to-back DDC losses, Vela Khumalo pinpoints the problem

Coach Vela Khumalo in charge of Kaizer Chiefs' DStv Diski Challenge side

Coach Vela Khumalo has pinpointed Kaizer Chiefs’ problem after the side suffered their second consecutive defeat in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC], falling 1-0 to AmaZulu FC at the Seshego Stadium on Sunday.

This follows a disappointing 4-1 loss to Orbit College FC the previous weekendโ€”a result that shocked many who expected a routine win for the Glamour Boys.

This marks the first time that Amakhosi has lost two games in a rowโ€”a statistic that sits uneasily with the clubโ€™s high standards.

Following the weekend’s action, Chiefs sit fifth on the DDC log with 27 points from 18 matches.

‘WE ARE BUILDING A NEW TEAM’: VELA KHUMALO

Despite the slump, coach Khumalo remains optimistic, citing a massive transition within the squad as the primary cause for the dip in results, as several key players of the team are sent out on loan to gain experience.

He went on to state that integrating young talent from the lower divisions mid-campaign in the DDC environment is no small feat.

Furthermore, Khumalo admitted that while the losses are difficult to swallow, the development of the youth remains the priority.

“โ€ŽNothing is going wrong, really. In fact, I’m happy with the performance I have seen today. But you have to understand that this is a new team, and we have Under-17 players because most of our key players are out on loans. We are now building a new team,” explained Khumalo.

“That being said, I cannot really condone the fact that we lost the game. We lost for the second time in a row, and that has never happened before. However, we are in the middle of the season, losing players, and we had to get other players from our lower divisions, which I’m proud of because they are coming well to occasion.

โ€Ž”I mean, one can see what we have, and we hope that going forward, we will cook again and get it right until the next season when we can get our mojo back.”
