Pirates’ Mbule debate: Mokoena settles the position question

Former Orlando Pirates winger Lebohang Mokoena believes Sipho Mbule’s shift into a deeper central role unlocks the best version of the midfielder, saying the position gives him the space and time to express his best craft.

Coming into 2026 after the AFCON break, Mbule missed the squad list for three consecutive matches. The 27-year-old finally made his first appearance of the year in Pirates’ 4-1 Nedbank Cup round of 32 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, and in the subsequent 3-0 win over Marumo Gallants.

While the Bethlehem-born playmaker earned his AFCON ticket with Bafana Bafana operating as a number 10, he played in a different position against TTM and Gallants in the past two matches. He was introduced deeper in the number eight role.

In both games, Mbule instantly made his presence felt. Within minutes of coming on, he stamped his authority. He capped his cameo against TTM with a well-struck effort from outside the box, his first goal in Pirates colours.

LEBOHANG MOKOENA: I PREFER IN THE SIX OR EIGHT POSITION

For Mokoena, that impact was enough to suggest the deeper role might just be the platform Mbule needs to influence matches more consistently

“We’ve been talking about the MasterChef’s [Sipho Mbule] position,” Mokoena said on the Soccer Beat podcast. “And a lot of people, maybe not all of them, but a lot of people, and you’re also included, say that I would prefer him in a six position or an eight position.

“It is where he’s more involved with the buildup and tryiquickly get the ball to the attackers, who are really quick, you know. He can get [Oswin] Appollis, [Relebohile] Mofokeng very quick in the pockets. They turn, they face the defenders.

“With the MasterChef, if you have him in that position, he’s more composed. He gets the ball, waits for the team to come. He joins them, then lays off a pass, those through passes, you know.

“So, with him coming in the second half, I think he’s going to be a key. He will be a key figure for the team when it comes to game management for Orlando Pirates,” Mokoena added.
