Gavin Hunt explains Tshegofatso Mabasa’s absence in Magesi tie

Tshegofatso Mabasa in action for Stellenbosch FC

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has provided clarity on the absence of striker Tshegofatso Mabasa following his side’s 1-1 draw against Magesi FC on Wednesday night.

The Betway Premiership encounter, held at the Danie Craven Stadium, saw the Cape Winelands outfit frustrated by the Limpopo club, as both teams continue to fight to avoid relegation.

The South African youth international Langelihle Phili opened the scoring for Stellies in the 36th minute, but the lead was short-lived as Samuel Darpoh levelled matters for Dikwena Tsa Meetse just before the break.

Mabasa, who joined Stellenbosch on loan from the league log leaders Orlando Pirates during the January transfer window, was a notable omission from the matchday squad.

GAVIN HUNT ON WHY TSHEGOFATSO MABASA IS OUT OF ACTION

Hunt has revealed that Mabasa is currently dealing with a “medical problem” that has kept the forward sidelined during a crucial time of the season.

The veteran coach didn’t hide his frustration after the team’s recent outing, noting that the game’s specific nature required someone like Mabasa to get the job done.

“Mabasa has a bit of a medical problem that, between the medical department and myself, we’re trying to get him fit. It’s a blow not having him, because tonight was the perfect night for a player like him,” said Hunt.

“He’s a player who, if he gets the ball in the box, turns and hits, and those normally go in.

“It’s been a bit of a blow not having him available. I hope he will be back for the next two games, especially with us having a striker out as well.”

Stellenbosch shift their focus to the Nedbank Cup this weekend as they prepare for a Round of 16 showdown against Golden Arrows. The Winelands side will travel to King Zwelithini Stadium for the highly anticipated Saturday evening clash.
