AmaZulu FC DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] head coach Kurt Lentjies has opened up on his working relationship with former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend Thabo Mngomeni.
Lentjies was appointed to lead the Usuthu reserve side in January 2026 as part of a strategic technical team restructuring.
His arrival marked a new chapter for the club’s youth development, replacing Mncedisi Sibiya in an effort to overhaul the development structures and climb the rankings.
This past weekend, the team secured a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Seshego Stadium, just outside Polokwane. This victory handed Amakhosi their second consecutive loss in the DDC.
As it stands, AmaZulu occupies sixth position on the DDC log, sitting with 25 points after 18 matches.

‘HE’S RIGHT-HAND MAN’: KURT LENTJIES
Lentjies revealed that the decision to bring Mngomeni to Durban was a non-negotiable. The duo previously worked together at the SAFA Eastern Cape side FC Ravens. This was a stint where the two coaches solidified their mutual respect.
“I think of Thabo as my right-hand man everywhere I go. We worked together at FC Ravens, which was one of my closest contracts where Thabo joined me,” Lentjies told FARPost.
“He is a fantastic football legend. Not only is he a football coach, but he also loves to work with younger players and younger coaches as well.
“But you know, this machine is driven by him and me, and we enjoy working together. It will always be that way. So, whenever you see me, you will see coach Thabo; otherwise, I’m not taking the job.”
With 12 games remaining in the season, the focus shifts to their next fixture, which will be against Magesi FC at home on Sunday, 22 February 2026. The kick off for this particular showpiece is set for 12:00.
