Football agent Basia Michaels has provided insight into how Mamelodi Sundowns successfully secured the signing of Fawaaz Basadien ahead of rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

The highly-rated defender signed with Sundowns on a long-term deal from Stellenbosch FC before the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Basadien caught the eyes of Sundowns and Chiefs after displaying impressive performances for Stellies in the past few seasons under the then-head coach Steve Barker.

The talented left-back played a huge role at Stellenbosch, which includes winning the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup and qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup in the past three seasons.

During his spell at the Winelands-based side, Basadien featured in over 100 appearances across all, scoring eight goals and providing 18 assists. His performances at Stellenbosch earned him a place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

After rising to prominence in the colours of Stellenbosch, Basadien became one of the most-talked-about players in the PSL, attracting interest from several clubs, including Chiefs.

His agent, Basia Michaels, has revealed that Chiefs tabled an offer, but they couldn’t meet the asking price from the Western Cape-based side.

“There was interest from Chiefs [in signing Basadien], there was actually a formal offer from what I know, and it just didn’t meet the asking price,” Michaels said in an interview with Smash Sports.

“What I’m saying is that a player has valuation according to a club that he’s coming from, and the club that’s buying can put down a certain amount of money.

“Unfortunately or fortunately, sometimes, it depends on the circumstances, at that point in time, the asking price was very different. That’s it,” she added.
