Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns star Godfrey Sapula has explained why Kaizer Chiefs are a level below the leading Betway Premiership duo.

With the campaign gathering momentum, the title race is intensifying by the week. Soweto giants Pirates sit three points clear at the summit, while Sundowns remain firmly in pursuit with a game in hand, setting up a gripping battle at the top.

Chiefs have slipped to fourth place following Sekhukhune United’s 2-0 win over Orbit College FC. However, Amakhosi remain in the race with three games in hand on Sekhukhune and two on Pirates, who sit eight points ahead of them.

The Glamour Boys also have a game in hand on second-placed Sundowns, whom they trail by five points.

GODFREY SAPULA: KAIZER CHIEFS ARE STILL IN THE RACE, BUT…

Commenting on whether Chiefs are firmly in the race, Sapula believes anything can change in the second half of the season, although he feels Amakhosi lack the consistency shown by the Sea Robbers and Masandawana.

“For me personally, they are [in the title race],” Sapula said on the Omniaudioafrica podcast.

“But I don’t see the consistency in the performances. The log may suggest it, but I’m not really convinced about the consistency in the team’s displays.

“When you analyse the performances, you see it’s not a given.

“You talk about Pirates and Sundowns and the consistency of those two teams. But not really Chiefs in terms of consistency. Still, football is football; you never know what could happen in the second round of the season.

“Maybe they [Chiefs] can peak and say, ‘Yes, we are here.’ So for me, it’s good that all the big three South African teams are challenging. It’s making the league more interesting,” Sapula concluded.
