DDC: Sundowns turn up the heat on leaders Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns DDC side in celebrations after scoring

The 2025/26 DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] title race is intensifying following this weekend’s fixtures. While Orlando Pirates appeared nearly untouchable for much of the campaign, a recent slip-up has breathed new life into the chasing pack, leaving Mamelodi Sundowns within striking distance.

On the other hand, the defending champions, Kaizer Chiefs, continue to endure a miserable run of form that has seen them fall out of the title conversation entirely.

The Buccaneers came into this weekend’s fixture with a comfortable cushion, but their momentum was halted after they dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City FC at UJ Soweto Campus on Saturday.

The Sea Robbers, led by coach Roscoe Krieling, had been on a dominant run, but the inability to secure all three points has left the door slightly open for their rivals, Sundowns.

Furthermore, Masandawana took full advantage of Pirates’ slip-up, as they secured a vital 3-1 victory over TS Galaxy at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates currently lead the DDC standings with 45 points, followed closely by Sundowns on 42 points after 20 matches. Crucially, the Soweto giants hold a game in hand.

With only three points now separating the top two, the psychological advantage has shifted. Bafana Ba Style, who have been chasing for weeks, finally have the leaders in their rearview mirror with several rounds of high-stakes football remaining.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ FIVE-GAME NIGHTMARE

While the battle at the top intensifies, Amakhosi are facing a crisis of confidence. The defending champions played out a frustrating 2-2 draw against Richards Bay FC at Dobsonville Stadium this weekend, extending their winless streak to five matches.

The Glamour Boys have struggled for consistency throughout February, appearing a shadow of the side that dominated the league last season.

Now sitting 17 points behind Pirates, their hopes of retaining the trophy have effectively reached a premature ending.

Now, the focus shifts to the next matchday to see if Pirates can regain their composure or Sundowns will finally pull level at the top.
