The SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League action this past weekend saw the title race tighten and the relegation battle worsen, as Leruma United extended their winless streak and league leaders Free Agents FC dropped crucial points.
Leruma United’s search for their first victory of the season continued on Saturday after playing to a 1-1 draw against Young Pirates at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton. However, the result remains clouded by off-field drama.
The match was played under protest, with Young Pirates alleging that Leruma fielded an improperly registered player. Should the protest be upheld, Leruma risks losing the single point they fought for on the pitch.
The draw marks a staggering 20-game winless run for Leruma. Out of those 20 outings, the club has managed to secure only four points from four draws. As a result, Leruma are rooted at the bottom of the table [18th place] with only four points.
At the other end of the table, Free Agents failed to extend their lead at the summit, suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tembisa Hollywood Thunder.
Despite the setback at Eersterust Stadium in Tshwane on Saturday, Free Agents remain at the top of the log with 39 points after 21 matches. However, the title race is now a nail-biter, as they sit just one point ahead of second-placed Young Pirates.
