Neo Maema has emerged as a cornerstone of Simba SC’s attempt to break Young Africans’ dominance in the Tanzanian League, sharing insights on how his team can regain the top spot under coach Steve Barker.
Since last winning the league in the 2020/21 campaign, Simba SC have struggled to step out of the shadow of Young Africans. Despite numerous coaching changes, the Wekundu wa Msimbazi are still searching for the formula to end their rivals’ dominant reign.
As it stands, Simba SC are fourth on the table with 22 points from nine matches. JKT Tanzania lead the standings with 28 points, while second-placed Young Africans have 25 points; notably, both Simba and Yanga have seven games in hand.
Maema, who was loaned to Simba SC in August 2025, possesses massive experience from his trophy-laden spell at Mamelodi Sundowns. He won four league titles, made 120 appearances, and has a trophy cabinet that includes the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, and African Football League [AFL] titles.
WHAT NEO MAEMA SAID

As such, he has become an inspirational figure at Simba SC. The 30-year-old has issued a rallying cry to his teammates, insisting that collective effort must trump individualism if they are to have any hope of clinching the league title.
“They say that while a few individuals can win you a game, it is the team that wins championships. Being a collective unit makes for a healthy dressing room,” said Maema. “The happiness and the way the boys are coming together is what’s most important to me because I know what it takes to win a league. It is a long journey, and sticking together will be vital for us.”
Though he was on the bench when Simba beat Tanzania Prisons FC on Sunday, Maema said the team has shown elements of collectivism, something he learnt at Sundowns. SA star Rushine De Reuck scored one of the goals and was Man of the Match over the weekend.
“Sunday’s game was great. The boys gave themselves a good account…. we’re happy about the three points, but I’m also happy about the team spirit. I think that’s more important,” added Maema.
