FARPost has it on good authority that former Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu is currently trying his luck with Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Lerumo Lions.
Zungu most recently represented Betway Premiership outfit Magesi FC, whom he joined as a free agent in August 2025. The Limpopo-based side brought in the experienced player to bolster their midfield options for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 30-year-oldโs stint with Dikwena Tsa Meetse followed a period with Pretoria Callies. Interestingly, Lerumo Lions acquired their current second-tier status by purchasing the franchise of Pretoria Callies prior to the start of the current season.
Since arriving at Magesi, the gifted attacking midfielder has made 10 appearances across all competitions. A standout moment of his tenure was a Man of the Match performance during Magesi’s 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy on October 18, 2025, at Seshego Stadium.
At this point, it remains unclear what led to his exit from Magesi, a club that recently shook up its technical team by replacing head coach John Maduka with the veteran mentor Allan Freese.
As previously reported by this website, Zungu’s contract stated that he must behave professionally at all times, or the club reserves the right to terminate. This was because the player used to have off-field issues, which prevented him from making a name for himself at different clubs, such as Pirates.

NKANYISO ZUNGU TRAINING WITH LERUMO LIONS
This publication can reveal that Zungu has been training with the North West-based clubโowned by Sibongile Marokanaโfor several days.
The player is aiming to impress the technical team and secure a permanent deal as the league enters its crucial second round. If signed, Zunguโs extensive top-flight experience is expected to be a vital asset for the newcomers as he had made over 55 appearances in South African elite league as per Transfermarkt statistics.
In case Zungu gets signed by Leruma, his Betway Premiership experience is expected to come in handy and help the club finish in a better position in the South African second tier.
This is Leruma’s first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, having bought Callies’ status before the start of the 2025/26 PSL season.
As things stand, the club is placed seventh in the Motsepe Foundation Championship table with 25 points after 18 outings.
Leruma will return to action on Sunday, 1 March 2026, against the in-form Cape Town City FC at home. The kick-off is scheduled for 15:30 at NWU Mafikeng Stadium.
