FARPost has it on good authority that former Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu is currently trying his luck with Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Lerumo Lions.
Zungu most recently represented Betway Premiership outfit Magesi FC, whom he joined as a free agent in August 2025. The Limpopo-based side brought in the experienced player to bolster their midfield options for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 30-year-oldโs stint with Dikwena Tsa Meetse followed a period with Pretoria Callies. Interestingly, Lerumo Lions acquired their current PSL status in the second tier by purchasing the Callies franchise prior to the start of the current season.
While at Magesi, the gifted attacking midfielder made 10 appearances across all competitions. A standout moment of his time at the club was a Man of the Match performance during Magesi’s 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy on October 18, 2025, at the Seshego Stadium.
At this point, the exact circumstances surrounding his exit from Magesi remain unclear. The club recently overhauled its technical department, replacing head coach John Maduka with veteran mentor Allan Freese following a string of poor results.
As previously reported by this publication, Zunguโs contract included a strict professional conduct clause, granting the club the right to terminate the agreement should he fail to meet these standards. This stipulation was reportedly included due to the player’s history of off-field issues, which have previously hindered his progress at various clubs, including Pirates.

NKANYISO ZUNGU TRAINING WITH LERUMO LIONS
This publication can reveal that Zungu has been training with the North West-based clubโowned by Sibongile Marokanaโfor several days.
The player is aiming to impress the technical team and secure a permanent deal as the league enters its crucial second round. If signed, Zunguโs top-flight experience is expected to be a vital asset for Lions, as he has made over 65 appearances in the South African elite league with two goals and two assists to his name.
In case Zungu gets signed by Lions, his Betway Premiership experience is expected to come in handy and help the club finish in a better position in the NFD.
As things stand, the club is placed seventh in the Motsepe Foundation Championship table with 25 points after 18 outings.
They will return to action on Sunday, 1 March 2026, against the in-form Cape Town City FC at home. The kick-off is scheduled for 15:30 at NWU Mafikeng Stadium.
