South African defender Olwethu Makhanya is bracing for a big test after helping the Philadelphia Union storm into the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16.
The Union secured their passage in clinical fashion, dismantling Defence Force with an emphatic 12-0 aggregate victory, setting the stage for a mouth-watering clash against Mexican juggernauts Club América.
Club América are Mexico’s most successful team with 16 league titles under their belt. The CONCACAF Champions League version is the premier international club competition that brings together the top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Winning the tournament also secures automatic qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Now in his third year in the MLS, the 21-year-old has established himself as a key player at the Union. After initially featuring in the Union’s U23 side, Makhanya forced his way into the senior setup. The 2025 season marked his breakthrough, with 36 appearances and two goals. His club also secured the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the MLS team with the best regular-season record.

MAKHANYA REFLECTS ON HIS RISE
As he prepares to face the most successful club in Mexico, Makhanya reflected on his progress and the challenge ahead.
“Last season was really a big season for me. I made my MLS debut, so it was an important season for my growth. When the season started, I knew the debut was coming. I had set goals for myself and had expectations, but I would honestly say I exceeded those expectations that I had for myself,” the KwaMakhutha-born defender told SABC Sport.
Coached by former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell at the Union, Makhanya credits his rapid adaptation to their shared heritage. He views the former St. Louis coach as a key mentor who has taken his game to the next level.
Makhanya, who joined the Union at 18 from Stellenbosch FC under the MLS U-22 Initiative, has set his sights on the global stage. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in the United States, the young defender is eager to represent South Africa on his current ‘home’ turf.
