Orlando Pirates legend Oupa Manyisa has shared his insights into Relebohile Mofokeng’s recent transition to a central playmaking role for the Buccaneers.

The 21-year-old sensation has become the undisputed heartbeat of the Soweto giants since moving to the number 10 position. His impact has been immediate and undeniable, clinching three consecutive Man of the Match awards in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign.

Mofokeng’s stellar displays have ensured that Pirates remain neck-and-neck with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns. As it stands, the Sea Robbers and Masandawana are locked at the summit of the log with 38 points apiece, with Sundowns holding onto first place only by a narrow goal difference.

Traditionally utilised as a winger, Mofokeng has flourished in his new central role. While his explosive pace remains a threat, his vision and control have added a new dimension to Pirates’ attacking fluidity, making him a nightmare for defenders.

In addition, the talented winger has featured in 23 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals and contributing five assists for Pirates this campaign.

‘HE IS DOING GREAT’: OUPA MANYISA

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FARPost, Manyisa praised the youngster’s adaptability but offered his perspective on the importance of players being versatile.

“Honestly, he is doing great. You can see that he is scoring goals. But as an attacking player, you have to be able to play in three to four different positions,” Manyisa told this publication.

“This is because there are injuries and suspensions. So, whenever the coach needs you to play in a certain position, you have to go there and deliver.”

Pirates face arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership Soweto Derby this Saturday, February 28 at FNB Stadium. The kick-off for this mouthwatering Derby is scheduled for 15:30 CAT.

Both sides enter the Soweto Derby desperate to bounce back from recent setbacks. Pirates are still reeling from a heartbreaking 5–4 penalty shootout exit against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 Last weekend. That cup upset followed a narrow 2–1 league defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, which ended the Buccaneers’ impressive 14-game unbeaten run.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi are also looking to find their footing after a 2–1 midweek loss to Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership. This domestic stumble came on the heels of another disappointing result on the continent, where Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup following a 2–1 defeat to Egyptian giants Zamalek SC.
