Ouaddou on what sets Moremi apart from other Pirates players

Tshepang Moremi celebrates after scoring for Orlando Pirates against Kaizer Chiefs in Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has detailed what he sees in Tshepang Moremi and the qualities which the winger brings to his team.

The 25-year-old joined the Buccaneers from AmaZulu FC before the start of the 2025/26 season and immediately turned himself into a regular starter under Ouaddou. It is a dream season for the wideman, who has also established himself as a key Bafana Bafana member and made the 2025 AFCON squad.

Given his current form, he is likely to earn himself a place in the South Africa squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Moremi’s latest exploits were a goal and an assist in Saturday’s Soweto Derby showdown against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.

Although his teammate Kamogelo Sebelebele was named as the Man of the Match, Moremi had done enough to deserve that accolade.

When the season started, Ouaddou had three left wingers: Moreni, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Oswin Appollis. But the Moroccan was forced to make tweaks to his system to accommodate the three in the same line-up.

That saw Mofokeng being converted into a playmaker, a role he has thrived in. Moremi and Appollis have been switching wings with perfection, although the former is more effective on the left side.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS ON MOREMI TO PERFORM LIKE BARCA AND MAN CITY PLAYERS

“He is really a good player, an interesting player with a lot of qualities,” said Ouaddou.

“The problem of modern football is that we have many coaches. Everybody wants to be a coach. There are coaches on social media, and in the stands, there are coaches. They want the players to play the way they want. But as tacticians, as coaches, we have the eyes to analyse a player’s quality. When you see that his main quality is speed, we have to use this main quality to create the right environment and put him in the right position to exploit his qualities.

“But when people are looking too much at Manchester City, Barcelona, looking at these big teams, they want to put our players in the same position. They want to see him performing like these players from Barcelona and Manchester City.”

OUADDOU DRAWS IN NKOTA, MOFOKENG & APPOLLIS IN EXPLAINING MOREMI’S QUALITIES

“This guy is a winger. You have to use the speed, the pace, the crosses, and the shooting. Of course, with the capacity for combination in the half spaces. But it cannot be in the half spaces all the time, it’s very difficult,” the former Fulham defender went on.

“To be in the half space, you need to have these qualities of [Mohau] Nkota, Mofokeng and Appollis. But he [Moremi] has different qualities. He is a top player, but he is different.

“That’s why we had to use him with his high qualities. You can see it every time we use him as a winger; he can surprise many people. I think it is these qualities that give him the opportunity to play in the national team.”
